The Marazul ('blue sea') is in Barra, a 30-minute bus trip -- or 15-20 minute cab ride -- from the Pelourinho. It's near some of Salvador's best beaches and within walking distance of good restaurants, and two interesting historical relics -- the Farol (lighthouse) da Barra and the colonial-era Forte de Sta Maria. If you like Holiday Inns -- and don't mind being far from Salvador's historical center -- the Marazul is a good choice. A single room cost R$120 (about US$60 in 2002, maybe $45 in 2003).
Rooms are spacious and well appointed; all have views of the sea, either towards the lighthouse or towards the fort. The restaurant is on the 2d floor and opens onto the hotel's small pool. A good breakfast is included in the roomrate; other meals will encourage you to eat outside the hotel. At the time of my visit the ground floor bar was closed. Like a growing number of Brazilian hotels: 1) hallway lights are off until you step off the lift or out of your room, and 2) you must insert a card into a slot in your room to activate lights and air conditioning. Here are two youth hostels in Pelourinho for budget-travellers: ALBERGUE DAS LARANJEIRAS Rua Inácio Acciolli, 13 -Pelourinho CEP 40025-100 Salvador-BA Tel/Fax: (071)321-1366. E-mail: alberguej@alaranj.com.br http://www.alaranj.com.br/ Situated in Pelourinho, Salvador's historic district, Albergue das Laranjeiras' location is excellent. Besides its architectural ensemble, nowadays Pelourinho is a great leisure and culture center. With its cafes, bars, theaters, dance halls and art galleries, Pelô is a festival full of Bahian spirit, especially when Olodum band performs. The guests can reach all this on foot, and enjoy it anytime, day or night, with complete peace of mind. The hostel is also an excellent option for beachgoers. Near the hostel, at Praça da Sé, you can take a bus to any beach in Salvador or on the north coast. In the opposite direction, if you take the Plano Inclinado (Inclined Plane tram) or Lacerda Elevator, you can easily travel by boat to the beaches of Itaparica Island and Morro de São Paulo. At Praça da Sé you can also take the more comfortable "executivo" buses to the airport and to the Bus Station. The hostel offers dormitory-style rooms with lockers. Albergue das Laranjeiras also offers three private rooms with double beds, and extra beds can be arranged when necessary. Actual prices (including breakfast) please see at the webpage from the hostel, under "Prices".

This hotel is owned by Varig airlines. It is dark and foreboding and it's decor is very much outdated. However, the staff, other than those at the front desk are more than accommodating. There are many ammenities including a gym with regular exercise classes, a large pool with restaurant/bar, a small spa/salon, a business center with access to the Internet, a gift shop and a restaurant that serves three meals a day. The restaurant is actually beautiful, it's round in shape and has this huge colorful mural encircling its walls by a local artist. The complimentary breakfast each morning features a row of hot dishes, an assortment of breads and pastries, cheeses and meats, fruit, yogurt, cottage cheese & cereal options and juice/hot chocolate/coffee/tea. The room.... hmmm, overlooked the pool and a park. It was spacious, the AC was FREEZING (which wasn't necessarily a bad thing as it was really hot in Salvador), had a lot of storage space & had a mini bar. But like I said, this place could use a decor revamp. Location left much to be desired. While it is close to the beach and to Pelourhino the area does not feel optimal for setting out on foot all about town. It is next to a really beautiful yet small park but I didn't go to Salvador to go to a small park. I would recommend this hotel only if you were in Salvador on business.
Outstanding characteristics... like I said, their helpful staff (other than those at the front desk which seemed miserable and weren't so friendly). Tim had an hour long massage for like $30 (dollars) and said it was great. I utilized the business center Internet services for a minimal fee and enjoyed the suggestions its staff offered me where dinner and visiting Praia do Forte were concerned. We stayed a couple of nights only in Salvador, at this three star hotel in the city centre (the newer part, not Pelorinho), and found it absolutely fine for our needs. Its biggest draw was a good sized circular roof-top pool surrounded by sun-loungers and with a small bar selling snacks and cold drinks – a great place to unwind with an ice cream after the hectic streets of the city. Apart from this it’s a fairly typical city centre hotel, with 12 floors and 275 rooms. The restaurant served a good buffet breakfast, and we also had dinner there one evening when we were too tired to go out (standard international fare and some Brazilian dishes). There is also a small lobby bar, ideal for a night-cap. The rooms have the usual mod cons – air-conditioning, cable TV, hair-dryer and in-room safe. A standard double room is currently US$88, with a Brazilian buffet breakfast included.
