On my first trip to Gaeta in 1998 and armed with my $50 camera, we decided to walk up Mount Orlando to visit the mausoleum of Munazio Planco (pictures coming). Having spent a couple of hours in awe over both the size and state of this monument, we decided to take an alternate route back down to sea level. Among the unusual sights was this rare shot of the now famous castle Aragonese/Angovin of Gaeta.............we were astounded (and sure you will be too). Leave a Comment

Formia is not one of the most popular places for tourists to visit, but being based in this area on both occasions that I visited Italy, I find that hard to understand. The area has much to offer tourists, having everything that makes a place great for a holiday and yet if you just wanted peace and quiet , you could have that too. Anyway Cicero's tomb is situated on the Appian way, a couple of kms just north of Formia. It is not always open but much can be seen from the roadway. Leave a Comment

...........and around another bend in the road. By this time I had forgotten about the sore feet the aching back and the thought that maybe we weren't going to be able to get off the mountain this way, by the second glimpse of the castles............wow. Leave a Comment

Had a coin minted in their honour? It wouldn't surprise me to hear that you haven't but isn't it amazing that Munazio Planco did. He met himself every day, and yes had coinage printed in his honour. Inside Planco's mausoleum (I have been inside 3 times now) and on the first occasion there was a photo of his coin. I didn't get to Gaeta's museum, but Formia's museum holds a large collection of very old and ancient coinage. Leave a Comment

The Castles unprissied. The castles...........the upper one .....Arogonese and the lower Angevin. The upper part has a rectangular shape and cylindrical tower in 3 of its angles.........one tower is now missing. The lower part has an irregular shape and the angles of its two sides are located toward the medieval quarter and Mt. Orlando.........It has cone shaped towers. They originated in the ducal period of the 10th century and had developments over many hundreds of years. New towers were build by Carlo V (1516-38) This photo shos the stark facade and the cone shaped towers Leave a Comment

We were walking down this really rocky hairpinned road seemingly in the middle of nowhere in amongst all of the ruins of past eras when I caught this glimpse of something a little different..........I couldn't wait to get closer but that meant going around another corner and travelling downhill some more............. Off the beaten path that is. If you have been to Italy you will have seen a wall like this one and probably not thought much about it. But what happens to me is I just keep on thinking about it. Why did they build these walls with a curved peice on top? Does anyone know? Why would they spend the time carving the rock like that? HELP. Someone has to be able to solve all of these mysteries for me. Leave a Comment

This was taken in a garden in Lazio. I had never before seen a daisy with a red centre, hence the centre of Lazio having a red heart. Leave a Comment
