Not moo much of luggage. Most importantly - a safe bag for your camera, wallet and other small stuff you need when being in the city.
As I was in summer- the heat was incredible. I had one light skirt (believe me, dresses and various skirts for women are VERY practical) and several open shirts. My boyfriend had jeans and snickers, so ...he had trouble with that. Men, better take shorts. And of course, extremely comfortable shoes, sandals. That's the most important thing in outwear for this time of season.
Sun protection cream
Beachwear in case you wish to go to the sea (there is a metro line going exactly to the beaches) and a suncream. Leave a Comment

A big one and an extra one. You will go shopping. I promise.
In terms of "blending in," my blonde self had no hope. That said, the best way, if you are a young person, to do so is to mirror what the Italians wear. Large, very designer sunglasses are a must. Italians take these very seriously-- you will see sunglasses stores literally everywhere. I bought a huge pair of Diors while I was there-- and I fit in until I got back to the USA, where everyone thought I had become "Euro!" Miss Sixty jeans and bright colors are very "in" for teens and young twenties. Be wary of heels-- cobblestones killed some of my shoes! That said, bring a pair for going out, but make sure they are "stable." If there is anything you "forgot" don't fret-- you will find that which you are looking for and more in Rome!
Bring sunscreen. Italians naturally are darker than most US/Europeans-- so be prepared to find only spf 10 in Italy! Leave a Comment

absolutely
a city map! you absolutely want to take a rather precis city map along! For instance in Trastevere there are lots of curvy and winding vicolos (alleys), you will loose yourself if you don't have a good map of the area... Leave a Comment

We tried to pack as light as possible and I still felt like we had too much. One area where I seen this was of concern was on the train. Although we did not have too big of a problem, some people could not fit their suitcases in the overhead bins. Some of the trains had storage in-between the train cars but then your stuff isn't as secure as you cannot see it. So, the best advice is to pack bags that can expand and collapse so that they can be squeezed in the overhead bins. Also, we packed an empty duffle bag that we used to carry our souvenirs home. This worked out great!

A pair of sandals should suffice even in the worst weather in the summer. But ladies take a pashmina or similar type of shawl. You will need to cover your shoulders going into churches and into St.Peter's. It is also useful to sit on your scarf so that you don't get stuck to the seats in the hot weather! Tied around your handbag it will also deter pickpockets... Leave a Comment

Do not forget to forget your umbrelas:) We were carrying with us one and... no chance for a rain even in December when we have been there... This is Rome not Bergen...
A good camera !
Do not forget a good map. I was surprised to find everywhere maps for free but you can find marked on them only the most known places. If you really want to "touch" everything find a good one and do not forget to make a complete documentation before going there... at least on VT :) Otherwise you will pass just few meters away from small treasures...

For a week and a half, all I needed was one big suitcase and my school backpack. Also, a money belt to wear under my clothes because that's the best type of money-holder to avoid getting pick-pocketed.
Comfortable shoes are a must if you'll be walking a lot. If you're coming in summer, it can get extremely hot (like over 40 celcius) so definitely bring your lightest summer clothes. But be aware that you have to cover your knees and shoulders to enter a church so bring appropriate clothes for that. Also, if you're going swimming in a public pool, you have to wear a bathing cap (we were told it's illegal to swim without one).
If you're coming in summer, bring sunscreen since you'll definitely get burned without it. If you do get burned, aloe vera works well on sunburns.
If you don't know Italian, it might be useful to bring an English (or whatever language you speak) - Italian dictionary. Leave a Comment
