Take tupper ware containers so when you have bought the food you can put them in there and pack them into your suitcase. They wont get squashed then and no leaks! Just make sure you take decent tupperware! Leave a Comment

As you can see in the photo, I opted for an ugly green suitcase. This may appear to be a bad call initially until you get to Changi, Rome or Heathrow and see squillions of black or dark blue suitcases. Mine was always easy to pick out and has saved me quite a bit of time.
I take only one pair of shoes so I make sure that they are multi purpose. In addition I have some sport-sandals which can come in handy. Being Rome I wear a hat/cap as the heat can get to you if you are not used to it - keeping the sun off your face is a good choice.
Anything you forget you can easily buy at a Parmacia (though language could be an issue). I like to have sample-size items so I can travel light. I normally carry some hand cleaner with me as you can never tell what washing facilities you will find in out of the way toilet facilities.
For me the smaller the better. Currently it is an Optio 5i and it took every photo in my 2005 trip. Remember that if you have a rechargeable battery camera then you will likely need an adaptor for the charger depending where you are travelling from.
I like multi use items so I usually carry convertable pants so I have both longs & shorts in one unit. With the strict dress code for churches (eg St Peter's) your body must be adequately covered so make sure your day bag has enough kit in it. The door guards will not let you in otherwise!! I always take a travel size binocular with me. The churches and museums in Europe often have amazing art on the ceilings and a good pair of binoculars will really help you appreciate what's above you! Leave a Comment

I had to buy some film in Rome, and I thought it was expensive (probably because I'm used to getting good deals in multipacks from the supermarket). It was also quite hard to see where I could buy film (apart from obviously expensive photography shops) though that could have just been where I was at the time. I suggest you pack as many films as you are likely to need, plus some spare for emergencies.

Bring hats, raincoat, and umbrella. In mid-November it wasn't cold, but it did rain most of the time. Not torrential, but mostly annoying. We mostly walked around in light jackets or none at all, as you can see. Leave a Comment

If traveling in the winter, dress very warm! You'll be outside a lot, walking from place to place. Pack a scarf (they cost 8 euros there) and, if you have them, ski clothes. I wore my ski turtle necks that wick the moisture and it sure worked! Leave a Comment

I guess, this is rather a 'UN-packinglist-tip' : throw some coins into 'Fontana di Trevi' - so you may return one day to Rome... Coins have to be thrown backwards, over your shoulder, while you stand with your back to the fountain (Otherwise NO guarantee given for a return to Rome ) Leave a Comment

Duct tape, it has a million travel uses, like locking out exotic dancing boys in addition to making a credit card case and taping a passport/travellers checks under a table Leave a Comment
