 | Rome Piazza Navona Reviews | Tips 41 - 50 of 232 | | When we were in Rome, the church was being renovated, so unfortunately we couldn't see as much of it as we had hoped. On top of the facade is a sculpture of Agnes. It was placed there so she could calm down the giant that symbolises the Rio de la Plata on the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi that the church is indeed stable. Leave a Comment Address: Piazza Navona |
It represents one of the most popular and characteristic centres of the city. The piazza is adorned with three fountains of which the central one is the famous "Fountain of the Rivers". (Sculpted by Bernini and his pupils, 1650-51.) At the southern end of the piazza is the "Fountain of the Moor". At the other end of the piazza is the "Fountain of Neptune". Facing on to the Fountain of the Rivers is the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone(17th century), a masterpiece of baroque architecture by Rainaldi and Borromini. The piazza is completed by a further three buildings: the church of San Giacomo degli Spagnoli, the Palazzo Lancellotti and the palazzo Pamphilj. Leave a Comment |
Just an awesome place to hang out and observe tourists and locals. Get a tartuffo at Caffe Tre Scalini... they are 5 euros a pop, but some of the best chocolate I've EVER had! (and I am a chocolate addict). The church of St. Agnes in Agony is on the western side of the piazza and is very beautiful; inside is contained the skull of the 3rd century martyr. Check out the performers, especially the guy who dances with finger puppets, and the balloon guy. Avoid people selling you crap, enjoy the fountains, pity the "living statues," and look for the "running man," who is a rare talent! Piazza Navona is one of the most famous and arguably the most beautiful of the wide range of Rome's squares. In the square you have three magnificent fountains and an obelisque. It is one of Rome's liveliest squares, with many outdoor cafes, restaurants and night clubs in the neighborhood. The square is also famous for the number of street artists that come here to draw some portrait or caricature of the crowd of tourists who everyday visit this place. Do you know that Picasso started to sell paintings here in Piazza Navona? In the summer season it's an awesome sensation to come here to admire the beauty of this place. In the centre of Piazza Navona stands Bernini's most spectacular fountain, Fontana dei Fiumi (Fountain of the 4 Rivers), erected in 1651. It features a central rocky structure that supports an obelisk that was an ancient Roman imitation of the Egyptian form. Around this structure are four giant statues by Bernini's pupils following his designs representing the Nile, the Danube, the Ganges, and the Rio della Plata, each representing one of the four quarters of the world. This was my favourite Piazza in Rome, its beautiful, and the fountains are gorg! The architecture in this area is Baroque in style. The church here was being restored when we visited, but inside it is beautiful. There are street artists and cafes here to enjoy too! Leave a Comment |
This is for me most beautiful square of Rome! The history of the square goes back to Ancient Rome, here there was the Circus of the Emperor Domitian. Today the square is surrounded by old houses but in the past here there were great steps of circus. Here were carried out mock sea battles, public shows, games etc. The buildings that surround the square was constructed between the 1600's and 1700's. Pope Innocent X began to arrange the public square, with the recostructio of Phampilj Palace and the church of S.Agnese. For me the most beautiful thing of Piazza Navona is the central Fountain of the Rivers built by the famous BERNINI.. On the top of rocks sit the giants symbolizing the rivers of the four Continents: the Nile, the Ganges, the Danube and the River of the Plata. Leave a Comment |

This square was built on the site of the Domitian stadium. There are three fountains here. One of these is the Fountain of the Four Rivers. It was designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and was built by some of his pupils in 1651. Four giants represent the four rivers known at that time. The Gange, the Danube, the Nile and the Rio de la Plata. The other fountains are; the Fountain of the Moor and the Fountain of the Neptune. In Piazza Navona there are two churches (if my memory serves me well), some shops and restaurants. Leave a Comment |
