This is a good spot to rest and people watch. The Piazza di Spagna at the bottom is one of the most visually appealling piazzas in Rome. The fountain, Barcaccia, created by the father/son tandem Bernini is one of many interesting fountains in Rome. You will see people dipping their water bottles into the fountain all day, as it is drinkable. The view of the city from the top of the steps is worth the walk up. We saw it early in the day, without much of a crowd, which was a little disappointing. You almost want to experience the Spanish Steps in its full fledged chaotic glory packed with people.
