Built between 1720-1726, these magnificent steps combine straight lines, curves and terraces creating one of Rome's most distinctive and popular landmarks.
The steps lead up to the church of Trinita dei Monti with its twin bell towers. This french church was founded in 1495.

The Spanish Steps are located in Piazza di Spagna where the boat shaped fountain of the Barcaccia stands. The steps have been a meeting place for young Romans and tourists for centuries. It is a great place to visit in the cool of the evening, just sit on the steps and watch the world go by. Very often entertainment is provided, however it is not really needed as there is always something to watch , whether it be the flower seller approaching tourists or beautiful young Romans hoping to be noticed.
There are many restaurants nearby which can cater for all tastes and budgets. Via Condotti, one of Rome's most elegant and expensive shopping streets runs off the piazza towards Via del Corso.

Piazza di Spagna - Spanish Steps: The Piazza di Spagna
  • Tip Rating:
  • Elegant and scenic, the Piazza di Spagna provides a welcoming point of encounter at the center of Rome. There are 18th century buildings that surround it.
If you have limited time to visit Roma, you'll be very tired of walking... ( You need at least 4 days to finish Roma) So these stairs can help you to breath a bit and eat your meal, watching charming architecture and gazing at people around..

Piazza di Spagna - Spanish Steps: Spanish Steps
  • Tip Rating:
  • Nooooo..the Spanish steps was NOT built by the Spanish in Italy so get rid of that thought immediately. Rather, this steps were named as it was close to the Spanish embassy - at that time.

It leads up to the to the chiesa di Trinità dei Monti. Fashion shows are regularly around the proximity of the steps, or on the steps - easily done as the designer boutiques such as Gucci and Rolex (its very large poster now adorn the top of the steps as it can be seen on my pic).. and where I got my handy Amex replacement card (trust me, Amex did NOT pay me for this constant endorsement I am doing on my Rome pages..its jz that I am eternally grateful!)

Did I mention that this is the main shopping area for designer stuff??

Piazza di Spagna - Spanish Steps: Watch out for the cat calls
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Spanish steps, which were actually built by the French for the Spanish to try and bring peace between the embassies in Rome. They also lead to the most expensive shopping district in Rome along with the Cafe Greco. Famous more for its customers than for its coffee.

Lonely Planet- "This piazza, church and famous staircase have long provided a major gathering place. Built in 1725 and named after the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See, the steps lead to the church of Trinita dei Monti. In the 18th century beautiful Italians gathered there, hoping to be chosen artists' models, and many beauties of both sexes are still around. To the right as you face the steps is the house where John Keats spent the last 3 months of his life in 1821. In the piazza is the boat-shaped Pietro Bernini, father of the famous Gian Lorenzo. One of Romes most elegant and expensive shopping streets, Via Condotti, runs off the piazza towards Via del Corso."

Spanish steps definitely overcrowded and over-rated. You feel you ought to go, and then when you get there, wonder why you bothered!

Thats said after 2 visits, 5 years apart.

2nd time around, got more fun out of walking round the chic shops in Via Condotti etc and watching the locals "posing" with their designer shopping bags

These series of steps by Francesco de Sanctis (1723-1726) consist of twelve flights of varying width, which descend to the scenic Franciscan Church of Trinita dei Monti, dating from 1503. This area, a popular hangout for locals and travelers alike, is an ideal place to people-watch.

Piazza di Spagna - Spanish Steps: Spanish Steps

  • This is a good spot to rest and people watch. The Piazza di Spagna at the bottom is one of the most visually appealling piazzas in Rome. The fountain, Barcaccia, created by the father/son tandem Bernini is one of many interesting fountains in Rome. You will see people dipping their water bottles into the fountain all day, as it is drinkable. The view of the city from the top of the steps is worth the walk up. We saw it early in the day, without much of a crowd, which was a little disappointing. You almost want to experience the Spanish Steps in its full fledged chaotic glory packed with people.

This place is one of the prettiest and liveliest in Rome. An excellent spot to relax and watch people from every corner of the world.

The square took on its present name when the Spanish embassy was opened here in the 17th century. It is divided into two parts by the Fontana della Barcaccia shaped like a sinking boat with water pouring out of the bow and stern. The Scalinata Di Spagna (Spanish Steps) was built by F. De Sanctis in 1726. This elegant staircase cascades down one of Rome's famous seven hills. The flight of 137 steps was built in the 18th Century to connect the piazza with the church of Trinità dei Monti and the Pincio Hill.

Piazza di Spagna - Spanish Steps: Do go to the Spanish Steps
  • Tip Rating:
  • >Do go to the Spanish Steps which were built in the 17th century. The steps combine straight sections, curves and terraces to create one of the cities most dramatic ,distinctive landmarks. This is one of the most lively places in Rome.At the bottom of the steps is Piazza di Spagna, and the Barcaccia fountain(1627)which resembles a sinking boat. The shopping here is great.Loads of trendy shops. Go to the Forum, which was the centre of political, commercial and judical life in acient Rome. There are a patchwork of ruined temples and basilicas.Excavation of the forum continues today. The Arch of Septimus Serverus must not be missed. It was built in ad 203 and is the best preserved and most striking monument of the forum
Do walk around and discover old streets and squares and find a non-tourist restuarant and have a typical Italian meal. There are endless amounts of churches and temples and the decoration in them is amazing.St Peters where Michelangelo's dome is the tallest in the world, sadly he died before completing it. Buy a map and just go for a walk and discover Rome.Do check out the great shops in Rome.Piazza di Spagna and Piazza del Corso have good shops.
