 | Rome Trevi Fountain Reviews | Tips 31 - 40 of 362 | | Fontana di Treve, or Trevi Fountain as we American's call it, is thought to get its name from the three streets (tre vie) that come together at this rather small piazza. Although the present fountain wasn't finished until 1732-1751, it was started some hundred years earlier. It's source is still the Aqua Vergine aqueduct, although for the past 40 or so years it has been chemically treated and partially recirculated by a system of electric pumps. The fountain was cleaned and restored for the first time from 1989-91, but needed it again by 1999. The Large archway representing the palace of Neptune. Neptune is in the statue in the chariot drawn by sea horses. Other white marble statues also adorn the beautiful fountain. We took the metro to the Spagna station, checked out the Spanish Steps, then walked the couple blocks to the Trevi Fountain. There are plenty of signs around the central part of the city to steer you in the right direction. The fountain is a beautiful spot to stop and rest for awhile---or to sit and enjoy a gelati from a nearby stand. There's even a drinking fountain there for refilling your water bottle. But it's not recommended that you drink from the Trevi fountain because of all the chemicals in it. And, yes, we threw a couple coins in the fountain to make sure that we'll be coming back. The Trevi Fountain has become one of the most endearing symbols of Rome. This Baroque creation is Rome's largest fountain, 85 feet high and 65 feet wide. Situated at the site of three roads (tre vie) in ancient Rome, it delivered pure water from a source outside the city and brought via an aqueduct named Aqua Virga, after the alleged virgin who found the water source. The original fountain worked for 400 years till the Goth invaders destroyed the aqueduct, one of the prime reasons for the fall of Rome. During the Renaissance, the Roman custom of building a fancy fountain at the end of an aqueduct was revived. Several fountains were built on this site on order of various popes, but the fountain we see today was built between 1732 and 1762 at the order of Pope Clement XII and designed by Nicola Salvi. In 1998 the fountain was refurbished with the addition of recirculating pumps. The last 3 images predate the cleaning. There is a lot more to the symbolism of the Trevi Fountain than some buxom movie actress splashing around in the water. Like so many Italian classic sites, mythology plays a major role in the characters depicted. The overall theme is the taming of the waters. The background is comprised of an Arch of Triumph with 4 Corinthian-style columns and an upper level filled with statuary. The center piece is the imposing Neptune guiding a chariot drawn by seahorses, one described as placid and the other agitated, to characterise the changing moods of the sea. They are guided by tritons, one aged and the other young, representing the extremes of humanity. Smaller niches to the side contain the figures of Abundance (wealth - on the left) and Salubrity (health - on the right). The statues above are of "Agrippa approving the plans for the aqueduct" and "The Virgin leading the soldiers". Current legend states that one should throw a coin with the right hand over the left shoulder to ensure a return to Rome. The true legend --- 1 coin - return to Rome. 2 coins - get married. 3 coins - get divorced. Leave a Comment Directions: There are traditionally about eight million tourists gathered in the small square in front of the fountain, making itone of the most congested touristic sites in Rome. The only thing I disliked about the Trevi Fountain was the hundreds of tourists that were there (and yes, I was just another one of them). But if you can fall in love with a fountain, then I fell in love with the Fontana di Trevi. It's in a small square, with tall buildings around it, making the atmosphere feel very cosy. It is especially beautiful in the evening when it is lit up. Also, while at the fountain you are supposed to stand at the waters edge, with your back to the fountain and throw a coin over your left shoulder - this is supposed to mean that you will return to Rome. Now the fountain itself is very impressive. I've heard a lot of people say it was smaller than they thought it would be... to me it was bigger than I though it would be, and I thought it was stunning to look at. It was completed in the mid 18th Century and was designed by Nicola Salvi. The central figure of the fountain is Neptune, the sea god. The figures that stand immediately to the left and right of Neptune are supposed to represent fertility and good health. Leave a Comment |

I just wanted to sit here forever. The sound of the water falling and the awesome sculptures were so captivating. Trevi is Rome's largest fountain, completed by Nicola Salvi in 1762. The sculptures are of Neptune flanked by two Tritons, who each lead a horse. The site of Fontana di Trevi originally marked the terminal of the ancient Acqua Virgo aqueduct, built in 19 B.C. This area will be crowded, but definitely a must-see! Leave a Comment |
The water at the bottom of the Trevi fountain represents the sea. Legend has it you will return to Rome if you throw a coin into the water. You should toss it over your shoulder with your back to the fountain. The fountain's bottom is full of coins. I have done so and returned to Rome. Second time I did it again so I am looking forward to return ! Leave a Comment Address: Trevi Quarter, in Quirinale district |
Admittingly I have not been to any other country outside of London to see so many landmarks in one city but the Trevi Fountain must be one of the more famous landmarks in Rome. The main focus is to the sea God Neptune, riding a winged chariot driven by sea horses. The chariot is drawn by winged steels and is led by a pair of tritons, the figures in the side represent good health and fertility. Many a tourist throw coins into the fountain as its claimed that if one throws a coin, the fountain it guarantees your return to Rome. A second subsequent coin, if thrown in allows for a 'wish' - or so the claim says.. I think I got this from a Lonely Planet book. Do remember tho that the coin must be thrown using your LEFT hand over the RIGHT shoulder. I loved this place so much that I came back to get night snaps - as my pic shows. Nicola Salvi completed this high-Baroque fountain in 1762. It is one of Rome's most famous monuments. Neptune's chariot is led by Tritons with seahorses, one wild and one docile, which represented the moods of the sea. The word Trevi refers to the three roads (tre vie) which convirged at the fountain. It is said you return to Rome when you flip a coin over your shoulder. The Trevi Fountain (Italian: Fontana di Trevi) is the largest — standing 25.9 meters (85 feet) high and 19.8 meters (65 feet) wide — and most ambitious of the Baroque fountains of Rome. The fountain at the juncture of three roads (tre vie) marks the terminal point of the Aqua Virgo (Italian: Acqua Vergine), one of the ancient aqueducts that supplied water to Rome. In 19 BC, supposedly with the help of a virgin, Roman technicians located a source of pure water some 13 km (8 miles) from the city. (This scene is presented on the present fountain's facade). However, the eventual indirect route of the aqueduct made its length some 22 km (14 miles). This Aqua Virgo led the water into the Baths of Agrippa. It served Rome for more than four hundred years. The "coup de grace" for the urban life of late classical Rome came when the Goth besiegers broke the aqueducts. Medieval Romans were reduced to drawing water from polluted wells and the Tiber River, which was also used as a sewer. -- Coin throwing -- A traditional legend holds that if visitors throw a coin into the fountain, they are ensured a return to Rome. Among those who are unaware that the "three coins" of Three Coins in the Fountain were thrown by three different individuals, a reported current interpretation is that two coins will ensure a marriage will occur soon, while three coins leads to a divorce. A reported current version of this legend is that it is lucky to throw three coins with one's right hand over one's left shoulder into the Trevi Fountain. Approximately 3,000 Euros are thrown into the fountain each day and are collected at night. The money has been used to subsidize a supermarket for Rome's needy. However, there are regular attempts to steal coins from the fountain, including some using a magnetized pole. Address: It is located in the rione of Trevi. |

The Trevi fountain is probably the most beautiful anywhere. The water is bright blue against the stark white marble is stunning. It is in a fairly small square so it can get very crowded, legend has it that if you throw a coin into the pond will return to Rome. The statue represents Neptune with two Tritons at his side. There is a second, less well-known romantic ritual associated with the Trevi Fountain. This legend pertains to the little fountain found on the left side, known as 'the small fountain of lovers'. According to the legend, couples that drink from the mini fountain will be forever completely faithful to their partner. Sweet! Nope, we never drank from the fountain nor tossed a coin over our left shoulder haha. We did use the cool water to freshen up though as the heat was pretty fierce! We then had some ice cold coconut on the side of the fountain and hubby had an ice cream too. Leave a Comment Address: Rome Piazza di TreviDirections: The fountain is a 5 minute taxi ride away from the central Termini train station.
