 | Rome Trevi Fountain Reviews | Tips 41 - 50 of 362 | | I loved my journey to finding Trevi Fountain! We were walking through all of these old streets in Rome and you hear a faint sound of water running. As you walk it becomes louder and louder as your excitement rises. Then you turn a corner and OH MY GOODNESS this beautiful fountain is in the middle of this small plaza. There are people everywhere and there's not near enough room to get the entire fountain in your picture. However, it is beautiful and really neat! If you can I would stay awhile and just enjoy it. There are a few cafes around if you wanna get something to eat/drink, although I'm sure the price would be high. There are people all over the steps so you can sit among them or walk up to the fountain. Now, here's the deal with throwing coins in the fountain...if I can remember correctly. If you throw in 1 coin you will be rid of your past love. 2) You will return to Rome. 3) You will find your true love. There are different legends so they may not be the same. This is the one I've been told. Some just say to throw one in to return. However, don't forget: you should toss it over your shoulder with your back to the fountain. It really a great thing to see. I would plan to spend some time here if only to people watch and enjoy Roma in a laid back atmosphere. Additional info: http://www.italyguides.it/us/roma/trevi.htm |

The Trevi fountain, yes its the same one from several movies including "Three Coins in the Fountain", "Roman Holiday", and La Dolce Vita", is a beautiful sight to behold. It is a tourist trap and was very crowded when we were there, but is worth braving the street vendors and crowds to see what is essentially the back end of a church. We went at night but I would love to see it in the daytime and wander around the area. It is not hard to find once you assimilate yourself to Rome and the metro system. don't miss it! I'll add more specific directions when I look at a map of Rome again. |
This is a great place to visit in Rome and is a wee bit unusual as it is attached to a building. The water comes from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct and was completed in 1762. The design centers on the triumphant figure of Neptunus Rex, standing on a shell chariot drawn by winged steeds and led by a pair of tritons. Two allegorical figures in the side niches represent good health and fertility. When you visit here one thing you have to do is toss 3 coins over your shoulder (you face away from the fountain). One for luck, one to return to Rome and one I can't remeber. Leave a Comment |
Fontana di Trevi is probably the most famous fountain in Rome! Lots of people throw coins in the water just hoping their wishes are gonna come true. And if you do throw a coin, you have to come back to Rome. Well, I did [throw the coin, that is...] :) Leave a Comment |
Legend has it that the traveler who throws a coin into the fountain will have a speedy return to Rome. Proper form is to put one's back to the fountain and toss over the left shoulder with the right hand. As the funds increase, so do the rewards---the traveler who tosses two coins will fall in love in Rome, and after three coins the wedding bells begin to toll. Years of romantic hopes have taken their toll; the metal eats away at the travertine and stains the pool. Since the restoration, travelers have been advised not to follow the custom, but this hasn't stopped many. In Fellini's La Dolce Vita, the uninhibited Anita Ekberg takes a midnight wade in the fountain. Squads of roving policemen and policewomen armed with whistles and attitude keep others from re-enacting the famous scene. Though we won't say how we came to know this, illicit bathing will cost you upwards of €500 and a stern talking-to in Italian. Impossibly buxom "model" Anna Nicole Smith tried to do her own Ekberg impression in 1997 and had to cough up the dough. Take the hint and cool down with gelato from nearby San Crispino instead. The Trevi Fountain was built between 1732 and 1762, and I think is the most popular fountain in Rome today, going by all the coverage it gets. It is a magnificent feature of Baroque design, with exquisite sculpting work... and there is alot of it! It is a really big fountain, which mesmerises one for a long time. So much detail to look at and take in. The fountain abounds with romantic myth... a long time ago a glass of the thirst quenching water from the fountain was said to ensure good fortune. As the years went by, this practice of actually drinking the water was replaced with the practice of tossing a coin into the fountain. There are many coins lying at the bottom of the fountain. The exact tradition says that one should throw the coin over your left shoulder while standing with your back to the fountain. Today the Trevi Fountain contains a wide collection of international coins tossed by travellers from far and wide (even South Africa! haha), with the wish to return to the city of Rome some day. If you are walking you take Metro line A to the Barberini stop. |

It is customary to throw three coins in Trevi Fountain -- one to return, two to fall in love, and three to marry in Rome. The coins are to be thrown with your right hand over your left shoulder. This quaint custom was said to have started in the 18th century. Leave a Comment |
Probably my favorite site in all of Rome in terms of sheer beauty and magnificence, although it is near impossible to narrow it down to one. If it weren't so overrun with tourii, I could have spent a lot longer examining the details and listening to the rush of the water. Tradition states that if you throw one coin, you will return to Rome, two, you will fall in love with a Roman, and three, you will marry him/her.
