I had heard that the Trevi fountain was really quite small despite the impression you get from seeing it in a movie. When you get there it seems to have too much to see in one hit, especially if in peak holiday time with the milling thousands all hoping for a peak, a pic, a throw, some water and a rest (no doubt). Still, it is a very romantic spot and it was looking pretty clean in 1998 as the water was again running in. There were people over on the right hand side filling up their bottles with water that became part of some of the photos that I took. This one is the central figure of the range that makes up this monument.

Trevi Fountain: The Fountain of Trevi
  • Tip Rating:
  • From the nearby Piazza della Pilotta, we take the Via San Vincenzo Lucchesi which leads us to the spectacular Trevi Fountain. Erected for Clement XII by the architect Nicolo' Salvi towards the end of the 17th century, it shows at its centre the statue of Ocean riding in a sea-chariot drawn by two Tritons..

Trevi Fountain: The Trevi Fountain - Fontana di Trevi
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Trevi Fountain is the largest — standing 25.9 meters high and 19.8 meters wide — and most ambitious of the Baroque fountains of Rome. It is located in the rione of Trevi.

The fountain at the juncture of three roads (tre vie - three ways) marks the terminal point of the "modern" Acqua Vergine, the revivified Aqua Virgo, one of the ancient aqueducts that supplied water to ancient Rome.
In 19 BC, supposedly with the help of a virgin, Roman technicians located a source of pure water some 20 km from the city. This scene is presented on the present fountain's facade.

A traditional legend holds that if visitors throw a coin into the fountain, they are ensured a return to Rome.
Among those who are unaware that the "three coins" of Three Coins in the Fountain were thrown by three different individuals, a reported current interpretation is that two coins will ensure a marriage will occur soon, while three coins leads to a divorce. A reported current version of this legend is that it is lucky to throw three coins with one's right hand over one's left shoulder into the Trevi Fountain.
Approximately 3,000 Euros are thrown into the fountain each day and are collected at night. The money has been used to subsidize a supermarket for Rome's needy. However, there are regular attempts to steal coins from the fountain, including some using a magnetized pole.

I like this fountain, it is gorgeous and beautiful.
Of course there are very much people all time, but when you be in Rome, you must to see it certainly ... and maybe throw you coins ;)

    Trevi Fountain: Fountain Trevi
  • Tip Rating:
  • The fountain was designed to show off the acqueduct of the Acqua Vergine built by Marco Vipsiano Agrippa in 19 b.C. to supply water to the thermal baths which he built close to the Pantheon. The water was named Vergin after the legend telling of a young girl who showed the original spring to a group of thirsty Roman soldiers. The first fountain to take the waters of the Acqua Vergine was built in 1453 for pope Nicholas V, designed by Giovan Battista Alberti in the spot called "of the Trejo" and through the years it took the name of Trevi. The fountain marked an important turn point for the town which for centuries had to use water taken from the Tiber river. Three centuries later pope Clement XII decided to substitute the old fountain and instigated a competition amongst the best sculptors of his time to come up with something better. His aim was that to supply Rome with as much drinking water as possible and at the same time to give to the city a grandiose work of art. Among the sketches was chosen that of the Roman Nicol? Salvi. The construction of the fountain lasted 23 years and it forms the east wing of the Poli Palace. It was modelled on the ancient arch of triumph crowned by the coat of arms of Clement XII. The figure of Ocean (Neptune) dominates proceeding, supported by tritons to either side; the one on the left struggling to control his horse represents a stormy sea, his partner on the right, blowing into a counch shell, symbolises the ocean in repose. The statues in niches either side of Neptune are allegories of Health and Abundance, overseen by figures on the pediment who represent the four seasons. Another romantic rite is linked to the small fountain to the left side, called "small fountain of the lovers".

    Trevi Fountain: Fontana di Trevi
  • Tip Rating:
  • This fountain, designed in 1762 by Nicola Salvi, shows Neptune standing astride a giant shell drawn by winged horses led by figures, one blowing a sea-shell horn. One of the horses is agitated, the other placid. In the niches to either side are statues of Abundance (to the left) and Salubrity or Health (to the right). Personally I liked the bits of the fountain to either side best, as the water seems to have worn away the marble in a way that looks very picturesque, at least to me!

Obviously while there, I took the opportunity to thrown a coin over my shoulder into the fountain, as I certainly hope to return. It's said that one coin will ensure your return, two means you will fall in love in Rome, and three that you will marry that love.

The fountain is famous not only for its size and beauty, but for an appearance in Roman Holiday, and Anita Ekberg's late night swim. I would love to see it lit up at night, the pictures I have seen look wonderful.

Trevi Fountain: Trevi Fountain: no matter how obvious it may be..
  • Tip Rating:
  • You just have to visit. It is famous for the Movie "La dolce vita", for the believe that, tossing a coin into the fountain, you will come back for sure.
An interesting think to know, however, is not so obvious.
The water of the fountain is supplied by a real roman aqueduct, more than 2000 years old!
It was the only aqueduct to survive (with little restorations after middle age) for such a long time: called "Aqueduct of the Virgin Water" it was built by Marcus Agrippa in 19BC and called the Acqua Vergine.
It is this aqueduct which supplies the water today also to the Piazza Farnese, Spanish Steps and Bernini’s Fountains in Piazza Navona

    Trevi Fountain: Trevi Fountain
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Trevi fountain is considered the most famous fountain in Rome (as my wife informed me when I neglected at first to put it on our viewing agenda). It was made more famous by the night-time wading of Anita Ekberg in "La dolce vita' and the movie Three Coins in a Fountain. After these movies it became the most popular fountain in Rome. The fountain is the end part of the Vergine aqueduct built by Agrippa, a general of Augustus, in 19 B.C. to bring the water coming from the Salone springs, 19 km away, to Rome. Legend has it that it was a young girl who showed Agrippa's thirsty soldiers where a large spring ran. This is illustrated in the fountain's upper panels. This fountain is the only one in Rome that has remained in use from the time of its construction to the present day. This is the aqueduct that supplies the water to the monumental fountains of the historic centre, from Piazza Navona to Piazza di Spagna

The fountain consists of four Corinthian columns surrounded by an attic with statues and a balustrade. A small-niche to the left contains the statue of Abundance , and above this is a relief depicting Agrippa approving the plans for the Aqueduct. The niche on the right contains the figure of Salubrity , with a relief above of the Virgin showing soldiers the Way.

The center niche is an imposing Neptune who firmly guides a chariot drawn by sea horses. As they gallop over the water, the horses are guided in their course by fine figures of tritons which emerge from the water and which were sculptured by P. Bracci in 1762.

The square there is smaller than I would have thought. It’s amazing how such a large fountain fits into such a tiny square. If you press your back against one of the shop windows opposite the fountain, you still can't fit the entire fountain into the viewfinder of your camera. Legend says that if you toss a coin over your shoulder into the Trevi Fountain it will assure your return to Rome one day, but like most thing in this world this is no longer allowed.

Trevi Fountain: Fontana di Trevi (Detail)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Designed by Nicola Salvi in1732. It depicts Neptune's chariot led by Tritons with sea horses - one wild, one docile - representing the moods of the sea. The word Trevi refers to the three roads (tre vie) which converged at the fountain. (From Lonely Planet)

Take some time to look at the amazing detail of the sculptures and the stories that they tell. Walk around to all sides of the fountain to get the full picture.

Trevi Fountain: Three Coins in the Fountain (over left shoulder)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Trevi Fountain is ingeniously built onto the back of a palazzo. It's crowded, crowded, crowded. Wait your turn to get a spot to throw your coins backwards into the fountain to ensure you return to Rome. Don't get mad when inevitabley someone walks into the frame as you click your camera. It's a must see.

  • This fountain is known all over the world. Tossing a coin into the ice-blue water of this beautiful work of art is said to ensure that one day you will return to Rome.
The area around the Trevi fountain is always crowded with local people and tourists. I would recommend a nightly visit: it doesn't get better than this! The sight of the Trevi in the evening is simply enchanting...
