  • Tip Rating:
  • There are two airports near Rome: Fiumicino and Ciampino, but most of the flights arrive at Fiumicino, which is well connected by train and taxi to the city.
Rome is a walker's paradise, with so many beatiful sights at every step. The only annoying thing is the intensity of the traffic in some areas. For long distances, you must rely on the taxis, since the metro and buses are dirty and not very extensive.

  • Tip Rating:
  • By plane via Aerporto Leonardo Da Vinci (Fiumicino)

Take the train to Statione Termini(leaving in the airport building) it takes you to the city center in about 35 minutes and it is the cheapest way.
    On foot.
By bus (you can buy your tickets at newspapershops on every corner) Tickets are cheap. You will notice that more than 50 % of the people doesn't pay. It is a national sport in Rome to travel free. Try the thrill.

Airports from/to Rome: Getting There and Around
  • Tip Rating:
  • By Air : There is a non-stop train which runs on the hour from the Leonardo da Vinci Airport to Roma Termini Station. The service runs between the hours of 7.30am and 10.00pm

If you happen to arrive at the airport at night and the train is no longer running Cotral Buses run from the airport into Roma. The bus stop is located near to the International Terminal arrival area. They will take you from the airport to Roma Tiburtina.

Taxis : You should use only the yellow and white licensed taxis as these have metres. These drivers will give you a fair deal.

Rental motor scooters : are a popular way to be motorised and avoid the worst of the persistent parking shortage problems. The Metro provides a good service with public transportation and there is an extensive bus system.

Airports from/to Rome: From Aeroporto di Fiumicino...
  • Tip Rating:
  • From Aeroporto di Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci) there are several ways to get to Rome. The Leonardo Express train leaves every 30 minutes from the railway station in the airport. It takes 30 minutes and arrives at the center station Roma Termini. The cost is 17.000 or 8,78 Euro. The first train is after 7 am and the last train is around 10:37 pm. Taxis are good when there is a group of people. Make sure the meter is on and running. They attach fees for using the taxi from the airport, number of bags, and if it is from 10pm - 6am or a holiday. Be sure to understand the add ons. There is a posting in every taxi with the amount they will add on to the meter. For 2 people to the center will run from 70.000 to 80.000 Lit with tip. There are buses that run from the airport, but usually they are not that frequent and are usually only good for late night arrivals.
Rome has good public transport, but can be confusing to get around. Rome has 2 metro lines A and B. Line C is opening in 2006. The two lines intersect at the central train station, Roma Termini. Otherwise, there is a very extensive bus system in Rome. It is possible to get anywhere in the city with buses, though it might take 2 or 3 of them. There are late night buses, as well. They are marked on the signs with an owl. Taxis are also very good. And in the center it should cost no more than 20.000 Lit from place to place in the center. Remember at night and holidays they add a 5.000 Lit fee.

Airports from/to Rome: Getting to the Eternal City
  • Tip Rating:
  • How did I get there?? Well, since I live in Mexico I had no other choice but to get there by plane, as most of you will have to do as well :) The Fiumicino airport is about half an hour from the town, but there are trains that take you from the airport to Termini train/metro station (near downtown Rome and with lots of bus terminals) which run every half an hour and are very efficient & comfortable, and PUNCTUAL too! That is not very usual in the Roman (or rather Italian) transportation system ;)

If you're arriving from somewhere else in Europe, you may arrive at the Ciampino airport...... this one is small but still well furnished and organized, and you can get from the airport to Termini by bus+metro (take a COTRAL bus to the Anagnina metro station and then use the metro red line: it's about 13 stations from Anagnina to Termini), or with shuttles that take you directly to Termini (by Via Marsala). Same way if you want to go to the airport from Rome.

If you travel by train you will also arrive into the Termini central train station.

Airports from/to Rome: By plane, train or car.......
  • Tip Rating:
  • By plane, train or car.... depending on where you're arriving from.

Rome's main airport - Fiumicino, also known as Leonardo da Vinci, is about 30KM from the city.

There is an express rail service between Termini Station and the airport which takes approximately 30 minutes and runs every hourly from 7AM - 10PM. Tickets cost L15,000.

And the regular service from Fiumicino to the city center takes about 25-40 minutes.

If you prefer to take a cab, the cab ride into Rome from Fiumicino cost at least L80,000, including a surcharge for the airport trip.

The fare: L11,500 from Fiumicino Airport to City; L14,000 from the city center in Rome to Fiumicino Airport.

Airports from/to Rome: Fiumincino and Ciampino...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Fiumincino and Ciampino Airports.
Ciampino being the smallest, this one can be tricky to reach. However, if you are flying from the United Kingdom, Go Airways offers really interesting fares, around £90 return, flying to Rome Ciampino.
The least i can say is that walking is the best way to discover Rome's beautiful places. I reached a point where i wasn't using my map anymore, I was walking around at random. The hills can be tiring though.
The tramways are quite useful to get around, unfortunatelly they are packed most of the time. Besides, not that many areas are deserved by the tramways. Buses can be quite a nighmare. Overall, Rome Public transportation is dissapointed and you will have to trust your feet. The metro is ok but the old part of the city is totally ignored by the metro, probably because of the old vestiges still remaining underground.
