 | Rome Cars & Scooters Reviews | Tips 21 - 30 of 50 | | Driving: Italians have fantastic reactions!! One time sitting at a cafe, I saw 27 cars heading for the same little spot. I closed my eyes waiting for the bang.... None came. I tried opening my eyes and discovered that all the cars had gotten past each other. Amazing! Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Go with public transport, like train etc. to go into the center if you are not a local. Local people from Roma drive good in their own town, but with their own rules. Don't try to bike in this big city. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Walk or take the Metro. Don't even THINK about driving, unless you are certifiably insane. I think it's a requirement to obtain a driver's permit in Rome. The trick to crossing streets was given to me by a resident of Rome. She said to watch for an opening in traffic and then step out with authority. And the cars actually stop! But if you hesitate at all, the drivers will realize it and go roaring on by. I've tried this, and it really works. There's another suggestion that I read in Bill Bryson's 'Neither Here Nor There' -- he suggests that when crossing a street you attach yourself to a group of nuns because all traffic stops for them. We went to Roma by car. People told us, before departure, that we were crazy to do such a thing : but Roma is definitivly not worst than Paris ;-) Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

We went there by car. But we left our car outside of Rome. We bought a ticket for one day for the busses, train and the metro. I wondered a lot, there are only two metro lines!!! And then we took the train to the centre. It was rather easy to use public transport and rather cheap. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Italy is full the small cars, the motorbikes ... and funny cars :) It is amazed me, how tightly they parking their little cars. Of course most of cars were scratched. Only big and expensive cars looks like new cars, without scratches. One year later I was possibility to ask from one Italian, why it is so ... and she explain, that the big and expencive cars are scratched too, but they owners are usually on the better economical condition and their cars be repaired as soon it is possible. Fiat have struggled in recent years. One striking thing I've noticed in Italy in recent years is the automatic loyalty of Italians to Italian motor vehicles is nowhere near as strong as it used to be. From a British point of view it's not all bad, because British cars are far more common in Italy than they used to be: the Nissan Micra must be the most popular, with Land-Rover and Jaguar common sights. The first two cars on the accompanying picture are made in Britain! Small, Italian-made scooter-based 3-wheeler commercials are still popular: see my Local Customs section and the weblink below.

I read this: You are fifty times more likely to die on the roads in Rome than you are in London or Los Angeles. Take the metro. Where only your pockets are in real danger... Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

The way the Romans park their cars is very different from the way we park our cars in Denmark. In Rome there are many cars in a small area and therefore they have to be very creative to find a parking spot. For example on a broad road they park in two lines on each side and there almost isn’t space for the cars to drive through. Because of the lack of space there are a lot of “smart” cars and motor-cycles. The “smart” cars can, because they are quadratic and very small, park between two normal cars, and the motorcycles stand in long rows just like dominoes. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

These tiny little babies are all throughout Italy and France. They are great! Especially that they are Smart becuase (I think) they are 1/2 electric and 1/2 petrol. So good for parking and the environment too! Just watch out for them while crossing the street! Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home
