 | Rome Cars & Scooters Reviews | Tips 41 - 50 of 50 | | Forget driving in Rome: the traffic is MAD!!! The only people drivers tend to slow down for are the clergy, so try to cross the street with a priest or nun when you get the chance. Renting a scooter might seem a very Italian thing to do and it probably is, but again you're taking your life in your own hands and do you really want to risk crashing into a car? Better to use the bus and metro then. Have a look at the map and rest assured: everything is within easy walking distance in Rome! A very handy bus line is 64 or 40 (Express) from Termini via the city centre to the Vatican, and a one-way ticket costs EUR0.77. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

It's incredibly easy to get around Rome using the metro system. Driving looked downright scary and finding a place to park impossible. Plus, the price of gasoline was insane! We found that an all day metro pass for 4 euro worked just fine for all of the sightseeing we did. Most things were within a couple of blocks of the metro stop and easy to get to. Only bad thing: avoid the metro during the week during afternoon rush hour. It's incredibly crowded (think sardines) and all of those bodies smashed together on a warm sunny afternoon... well, it reeks!!! Leave a Comment Theme: Subway/Metro

You want to avoid driving around Rome at all costs. I did it once when we picked up our rental car and it took about 10 years off my life. The Metro system is kind of limited (only two lines), but there are lots of buses, if you can figure out where they're going. If you are polite and can speak a little Italian, people are usually happy to help you figure it out. Make sure you have a ticket, though, and when you validate it in the machines, check that the date is actually printed on there. Once I validated a ticket and the machine must have been broken, because when some inspectors checked my ticket, nothing was on it! Luckily they believed me and let me go. However, I suspect this may have been because I am a relatively young woman. Others may not be so lucky. Leave a Comment Theme: Subway/Metro

For people who never wasn't before in Italy it is the exciting experience... In summer, when weather is hot, it looks like some madness arriveing to Rome. Our arrival time was at evening, when the working time was ended and peoples hurry to home. There were hundred cars who waiting in several checkout-queues in checkpoint, to pay the road tax. I think when you hurry to home, it is very stressful wait so in disarrangement of cars ... we were tourists in bus with contitioner and for us it was really exciting watch for show what was happen behind the windows of our bus. There were much to see - some peoples was eating, another couple was kissing self-forgetfully ;) ... there were young peoples sitting with feet on the control panel, there were family who pushing own car, because the radiator of car started to leak ... And so we spend the time, till we pass through checkpoint. Leave a Comment

Rome is not a good place to enjoying driving. It is a typical big city with lots and lots of cars, buses, trams, tourists etc. etc. A driver must be vigilent and never lose its concentration. I know its diffcult because you pass by so many beautiful buildings that u can't control yourself. I drove from Bergamo to Rome and it was in Easter Holidays. There was too much traffic on the Motorways and it took us 14 hours instead of 7 hours to reach Rome ! When we reached there we were extremely tired and sleepy. So, My advice is to never drive to Rome in Easter vacations. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

One of the easiest ways to get to your hotel from the fuimicino airport is to hire a private car. Now, this is not the least expensive way to get to your hotel but it is certainly one of the most convenient. I always use airportconnection.it . After I have picked up my luggage and gone thru all the security check points, they are waiting for me with a sign with my name on it. They help me with my luggage and have the car waiting for me at the curb. The cars are mercedes types and are new and clean. The drivers are all very nice and helpful and know how to get to all the hotels in the city. The fare is 45 euros each way and there is no extra charge for luggage. You email them the details of your trip and they will send you a confirmation email. They will pick you up at the times you request so there is never a worry. They can also advise you of travel time with traffic, to make it easier to plan your return trip to the airport. This company also offers sightseeing trips. If you are looking for a good limo service and/or tour company, visit their website: airportconnection.it They respond promptly to e-mails and are very reliable. Sandi (my traveling partner) began to feel her fingers tighten on the steering wheel, and her body tense, as we approached the city center of Rome. We had received very specific instructions on how and where to find the rental office. Unfortunately, the instructions did not know about road construction and detours. By the time I (the navigator) found where we were on the Hertz map...we were 10 streets away. Luckily, they had told us we could return the car to any of their convenient locations in Rome. After an hour of being honked and sworn at, we decided we were close to an alternate drop off location. Sandi being the good trooper that she was, stayed calm, cool and collected. Following my directions to the alternate location, we suddenly found ourselves right back at Villa Borghese...the original drop off spot! Go figure! Note: We would have never known in a million years that the drop off spot was here, had we not been told by our previous hotel. There is not a single sign to indicate the Hertz drop off spot is located under Villa Borghese. You will finally see a sign for Hertz when you pull in the underground city center parking garage. Check out my Florence page for Part I, the rental pick up. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

Via Dei Fori Imperiali brings from Piazza Venezia to the Colossium...Mussolini built it to have a road on wich celebrate italians army (italian what?!),it is said he crushed a beatiful medioeval zone in order of doing it....well,every tourist that comes in Rome pass through this road. It's really impressive and here I just wanna say do not be scared or disgusted by the car traffic and noise, try to take two step on it during the deep night time, then tell how does it looks. The city must live, over the ruins and the glories of the past, under the gas clouds and noise of the present. if you rent a car in rome just DON'T rent your car by maggiore rent-a-car company. they cheated us. we got a car with a half-full tank. as we returned our car we filled the tank 3/4 full (means paid 20 EUR extra) and wrote a notice that we had received half-full tank in the beginning. never the less they charged our credit card with 50 EUR extra. So we paid 70 EUR more than we thought. we protested by mail, but they just said, they won't pay us anything back. This company is crap. If you want to get know Italian inefficiency and bureaucracy - go to maggiore. Theme: Car/Motor Home
