Metro-Bus-Tram: Metro
  • Tip Rating:
  • I used the metro once to get to the Vatican Museum. We got on at Barberini and got off at Ottaviano. It was very crowded and it was also very hot. The one we were on looked a bit old and 'worn'. But I did notice we passed another train and it looked fairly new and very nice - so I guess some of the trains are nice, some not as much. :) To use the metro you get a ticket from the machines at each stop, validate it at the machine and then go through the barrier. As with any public transport where it is crowded, just mind your belongings (purse/wallet, phone, etc.).

Although, for some reason my ticket wouldn't let me through the barrier - and I had validated it and everything, but luckily there was a guard there (who had seen me buying my ticket) and let me through.

To find a metro stop just look for the logo - a red square with a white 'M' on it.

    Metro-Bus-Tram: Buses and Trams
  • Tip Rating:
  • The metro tends to bypass most of historic old Rome - thats because there is still so much of ancient Rome beneath the modern city that they can't dig a tunnel for the trains without running into 2,000 year-old brick walls, mosaic pavements, and marble columns! The ATAC buses and trams do go into the centre though and can be really handy.

We found the H BUs route: Termini (Viale Einaudi) - Via Nazionale - Piazza Venezia - Largo Argentina - Ponte Garibaldi - Viale Trastevere (for evening meals outs) to be the most useful.

  • Tip Rating:
  • The Metro system has only two lines, A and B, which cross at Termini (main train station) shown as the orange and blue lines in the pic. Its handy for hopping on and off if your hotel is nearby but if not the bus network integrates very well and can save a lot of legwork - especially when you try to pack so much into a few short days.
Tickets must be purcahsed in advance - available from many outlets - tabacchis, bars, or vending machines at metro stations and major bus stops - and validated to gain access in the metro.

A Standard ticket, valid for one Metro ride or 75 minutes on all buses costs € 0.77
Daily (24hr) ticket, valid for unlimited metro, bus, and train travel within the Comune di Roma are good value at € 3.10 if you intend to make several journeys and for longer stays € 12.39 for a weekly ticket is ideal.

We found the system really easy to use and maps of the lines are frequently found to enable you to travel in the right direction!

    Metro-Bus-Tram: Metro Mayhem
  • Tip Rating:
  • The metro can be manic at rush hour - so try to avoid! The day we went to the Vatican was before 9am and it took 3 trains before we could get on one as it was so packed - but then the 3 trains arrived in the space of 5 mins so we didin't have to wait long.

  • The best way for going around in Rome is of course walking.. 8)) But sometimes you do a plan and there can be huge distance between your must seens... The solution is simple, just take subway..
P.s. You can use the same ticket more than once in an hour.

Metro-Bus-Tram: The Metro, the best value in Rome
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Metro is a great resource to use to get around Rome, especially all the major tourist sights. It costs just 1 Euro for a trip, but you can purchase a 24 hour pass, 3 day pass, a weekly pass, and there are other deals as well. We found this mode of transportation to be so convenient and easy to follow. The metro basically has 2 lines- Line A and Line B. Both lines intersect at Termini, Rome's train station. I recommend finding accommodations close to a metro stop as this can be very convenient, especially when you are trying to maximize your time to see all the tourist spots. For example, we stayed by the Barberini stop and could get on the metro and be at the Ottaviano stop within 10 minutes to go to the Vatican. Or from the Barberini stop we could go to Termini and pick up Line B and be at the Coliseum within just a few minutes as well.

There are many busses in Rome, and all of the council operated ones (I think) are this bright orange. You do have to purchase your tickets before hopping on a bus and the little clicking devices are usually found close to the central and back doors. Funny thing about busses in some places though.........take Formia for instance........you have to get in one door and must alight through the central door.............I always had visions of not being able to make it through the crowd quickly enough before the doors shut..............I saw someone jammed one day ........ouch.

    Metro-Bus-Tram: On bus trips
  • Tip Rating:
  • The VT fora regularly host questions of the "how often does bus line xx run?" or "until what time does tram yy run?". I thought I'd answer once and for all so I created this tip.

First of all, buses run relatively frequently during the day, that is starting around 5 am and until midnight. Between midnight and 5 am only the lines whose number ends with an N (e.g. line 70N) actually run, and usually at intervals going from 20 to 60 minutes.

Secondly, do consider that buses are affected by traffic conditions, so do expect some variance from the posted times, especially at rush hour (which is roughly between 7 am and 10 am, and again between 5 pm to 8 pm). Also, during heavy traffic, buses suffer from a notorious phenomenon (which has been even studied with queuing theory) that sees buses running on the same line pile up (a very full one at the front of the pile, followed by increasingly empty ones right away). This is inevitable so give up to it, and if you see a too full bus it may be worth taking a risk and waiting for the next one.

Going around by bus in Rome may feel frustrating at times, but before raging out you must consider the sheer size of the city. There are 326 bus lines in Rome, and they cover an amazing 2152 kms, employing 2487 buses. Overall, buses and trams travel some 140 MILLION kms every year, transporting close to a billion people. Expecting a bit of delays is just normal.

Since VT does not give me enough space, I'll detail instructions on how to find out bus timetables in another tip.

    Metro-Bus-Tram: Metro
  • Tip Rating:
  • Rome's Metro is not too bad & comprises 2 lines. Trains run from 5 AM to 11:30 PM with Line A, the red line East-West and Line B, the blue line North-South.

Line A includes stops near the sights of the Vatican (Ottaviano-Vaticano), Piazza Del Popolo (Flaminio), the Spanish Steps (Spagna), Piazza Barberini and Piazza della Repubblica. Line B stops at Colosseum (Colosseo), Circus Maximus (Circo Massimo), the Pyramide (Piramide) and San Paolo Basilica (San Paolo).

The common point for both is Termini Station so you can get on any line and change at Termini. At the end of each line is a bus station - the only one I have used is at Anagnina on line A & it's quite large. Finding your bus during the busy part of the day is a real challenge!!

For full info visit the site below which includes the lines & connections.

The subway is a very convenient way of getting around Rome. Currently each ticket costs 0.77 euros and they are valid for 75 minutes after stamping. In this 75 minutes you're free to transfer from buses to buses but only once for subway. Buy them at newspaper stands around the city, at the Termini train station, or in subway stations. The automatic ticket machines at subway stations are difficult to use.
