Metro-Bus-Tram: ROMA PASS
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you have 3 full day in Rome, i would suggest buying the ROMA PASS which cost 20 Euro. It includes a city map which indicate the places of interest/museum and how to get there by bus and metro. It gives you the flexibility to take unlimited metro and bus ride for 3 days period. It's actually very convenient. For eg.After visiting Coloseum, you can catch the metro/bus at the nearest bus stop to your next destination. It actually saves you lots of time and walking when you get tired. And the best thing is it includes FREE ENTRANCE to the first 2 museum you visit and discount for the rest of the museum. Most of the museum you would like to visit is in in pass program like SAINT ANGELO MUSEUM, COLOSEUM MUSEUM, VILLA BORGHESE etc except VATICAN CITY MUSEUM.Ticket to S'Angelo museum/Coloseum alone cost over 10euro each.So it's quite a saving. And you can go through the fast track into Coloseum with the pass and do not need to queue the normal lane.I think ROMA PASS is better than the hop on n hop off bus tour which restrict to few stops only and you gotta go back to the desinated stop to catch the bus.And it's actually very easy to take bus in Rome city area coz there's a route table indicated at every bus stand. So you know you are heading the right place and won't go the wrong direction. You can buy the pass at Tourist Info Center in Station Termini,Leonard Da Vinci airport etc.

Metro-Bus-Tram: Maps from public transit system website
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you want maps of Rome's public transportation system, go to http://www.atac.roma.it/linee/index.asp?i=6&p=1 .
"Roma citta" is the city of Rome.
"Roma centro" is the city center.
"Metro e ferrovie regionali" is the Metro and local trains.
"Rete tranvaria" is the tram network.
"Linee notturne" are the lines running at night.
"Linee di Ostia" are the lines either to or in Ostia (I haven't looked)
"Linee periferiche" are lines outside the city center
"Linee elettriche" are electric bus lines

Note that each of these downloads are zip files that contain one pdf file - the one you want...so you have to have an unzip product and Adobe Acrobat Reader to view them...

    Metro-Bus-Tram: ATAC
  • Tip Rating:
  • Going around rome is quite easy. Make use of the integrated card system of the subway (metropolitana or metro), l'autobus or pullman (buses) and trams or simply ATAC (Agenzia per i Trasporti Autoferrotranviari del Comune di Roma) You can buy ATAC tickets from any local tabacchio or bar.

Tickets that cost 1euro is valid for 75minutes from the time is has been stamped and worth all bus/tram rides you can plus 1 metroride.

Ticket that cost 4euro is valid for the whole day with trams, buses and subway.
There are also tickets valid for 3- days (best recommended for tourists, costs 11euro), 1 week and one-month (should you need to stay longer in Rome). Just ask the local tabacchaio for the best advise.

Metro-Bus-Tram: Taking a bus around Rome
  • Tip Rating:
  • For getting around town use the public transport. The busses are nice with air-conditioning so it makes for a little break from all of the walking.

The busses and subway work well in Rome. Just watch the gypsy kids and mothers.

Most of the people of Rome use Vespas to get around so watch out for them.

    Metro-Bus-Tram: Ristotram
  • Tip Rating:
  • Trambus has renewed a number of its vintage streetcars into elegant tram restaurants known as Ristotram. These unique trams are the onty ones of their kind in Italy. They can arrange a wonderfully prepared meal for up to 30 people.

Ristotram also can be rented in exclusive use, for surprise parties, corporate venues, weddings, birthdays, christenings and many other forms of entertainment.

    Metro-Bus-Tram: Metro
  • Tip Rating:
  • The roman subway is quite basic: it has only 2 lines that cross each other. Now, why's that? Because everytime they dig a hole, they find a roman ruin. Thus, the metro is what it is and it'll be no longer expanded.
Although it has only 2 lines, it reaches the most important places in the city. The quickest way to get to the Vatican is by metro. But, you'll miss the beautiful surroundings the city has to offer. So take the metro only if you're in a hurry. And only if you're sick and tired of Rome, which I think you won't.

    Metro-Bus-Tram: Tramway in Rome
  • Tip Rating:
  • Rome has a 66 km length tramway line network. Trams (reserved numbers from 1 to 19) usually run from 5.00 AM to 12.00 PM (except line 8 which is operated till 2.00 AM).

There are 6 tramway lines in Rome :
    * line 2 : Pl. Flaminio - P. Mancini (the shortest line, opened in 1990, Treno Articolato Stanga (TAS) cars)
    * line 3 : Stazione Trastevere - Valle Giulia (SOCIMI cars)
    * line 8 : Largo Argentina - Casaletto (light-rail line, opened in 1998, FIAT Cityway Roma I and II cars)
    * line 14 : Stazione Termini - Via P. Togliatti (PCC and MRS cars)
    * line 19 : P. Risorgimento - P. dei Gerani (TAS and Cityway Roma I cars)
    * line 516 : Stazione Termini - P. dei Gerani (TAS cars)

    Metro-Bus-Tram: Bus
  • Tip Rating:
  • The bus rides that we mostly did was between Roma Termini and Piazza Venezia/Largo Argentina (lines 40, 64), which is a major bus stop. With the week pass we could hop on anywhere. You need to study the signs at the busstops to see where the busses are going. Which personally I found a bit difficult.
Best to get a good bus map of Rome. I didn't have one.
The small bus on the photos is one that rides around neighbourhoods, like Trastevere.
Twothirds of the time we did not have a seat, busses were very crowded.
Tickets are not sold on buses so you need to either have a pass or buy a ticket at tobacco stores (Tobacchio), newspaper stands and cafés. A ticket, valid for 75 minutes costs € 1.
Tip:When you get into a crowded bus, put your rucksack or bag back to front so that you can keep an eye on your stuff.

The good news though, is that Rome is quite walkable and if you've done the largest stretch by bus or metro, you can easily walk to wherever you want to go.

  • The best way to get around Rome is on foot. The secodn best way is to take a travel pass which comes in various formats of one day 3 day etc etc.
I had taken a Roma Pass which is a city tourist pass and comes for 20 Euro and includes a 3 day unlimited free public transport pass(which is otherwose available for 7 Euro). The pass is like a small paper card.
The first time(or the only time) you travel in whatever mode(in bus its in the front, centre and back and in the train it is at the entry point of the platforms) you would need to get it validated(basically punched) at the machines. The machine basically sucks the ticket/pass and then gurgles and imprints a date and spits it out back to you. If you have a problem with it just reverse the side of the pass you have put inside. Its not complicated even if it may sound like that.
The passes need to be validated only once and though you would need to put inside the machine while getting to the metro platform it would spit it out without any further validation. In buses you just need to show it if anyone asks for it which is rare as I found.
I hear it is very important specially in the bus as if one gets caught without a validated ticket/pass one has to pay heavy fine even if he/she is a tourist or doesn't understand Italian.
For the metro you would can get access to the platforms only when you get it validated so thats not a problem as you cant get caught:-) but in buses you dont need to put it in the machine again and again after you have done it once.

    Metro-Bus-Tram: More on the Metro
  • Tip Rating:
  • Using the metro is easy. With just a few precautions, this can be a great time and foot saver for anyone. (see my metro tip for some precautions)..
You should get a map of the metro system to have a general knowledge of the stops. There are only two lines in the whole system but they cover a lot of territory. If you have any kind of guidebook, they will usually have a route of the metro system. If you don't have a guidebook, stop by the tourist information kiosk when you get to Rome. These maps are very helpful for cutting down travel time. They will show you where the various metro stops are and which line to take.
Inside the metro stations there are maps also. Be sure to read these maps and get on the correct train. They go in both directions, so you might end up going away from your target if you are not careful. Just read the overhead signs and the wall maps and you'll be fine.
Buy your ticket from a magazine vendor or from inside the staion. Make sure you validate it before you get on the train. As you go thru the turnstile, slip your ticket in the slot. It will spit out on the other side. That's all there is to it. If you buy an individual ticket it is good for 70 minutes or one train ride. (One train ride includes transfers as long as you don't go back out thru the turnstiles) Once you get off the train you need to buy another ticket. They do sell multi-day tickets if you will use the metro a lot.
When you exit the train, look at the signs. These will tell you which road you will exit onto. Most of the time, you have a choice which road to go onto and won't have to cross the street if you take the correct staircase up to the street level. (Don't get me started on crossing the street).
