 | Rome Beggars and Cons Reviews | Tips 61 - 70 of 84 | | Dont try to do any business on roadside people. Once you just ask for price or anything. They will come back of you and ask you to buy. |
Every where you trun in Rome you will see people beggin for money, old, yound, female, male, even kids are all standing about trying to take your hand earned cash. Dont whatever you do give it to them as they could easily go and get a bloody job. They totally put me off going back to Rome and they made the place feel unsafe even in the day light. |
Gypsies are a major nuissance in the most popular tourist areas. I have some pretty good stories about chasing gypsie kids that have stolen wallets and cameras. In the end, be aware, be smart with 'attachables' (wallets, cameras, purses). Leave a Comment |
I was stopped by an Italian guy who seems to be lost in the area of Colosseum, funny! :) Then another guy showed up and asked me if anything is alright...heee...it is so obvious that both of them knows each other...just smile and walk away! Leave a Comment |
I was warned by my tour manager NOT to deal with the North African Vendors. Not only is it illegal for them to sell items, it is also illegal to buy them. If you do decide to deal with them, watch for the police, and only pay 1/3 of what they are asking. Also, if you are not interested just ignore them. No means Yes or No could mean, "I don't understand, please explain how wonderful this trinket really is!" Leave a Comment |
I've been in many big metropolis around the world, and I have to say that Rome is not London but it's surely better than NYC about beggars. The existing ones, usually won't approach you (unless they are gipsies) but will just seat on the ground waiting for some offers. If you are driving a car, immigrants will try to wash your windscreens. In romantic places, some immigrants will try to sell you flowers. Leave a Comment |
If a man in a car asks you the way to somewhere and offers to let you have the latest Armani leather jacket in exchange for some petrol money, RUN AWAY as fast as humanly possible. Leave a Comment |
If you are coming into Rome by train, as soon as you exit the station you will be bombarded by guys offering to take you by taxi...for 70$$!! Ya right. We didnt get taken for 70 bucks, we got taken for 30$. Not as bad but still. I would advise anyone going to Rome to pick up a Rick Steves' Book and read what he has to say about these scamers. If you dont want to do that, then go to the TAXI line and wait for a taxi. Make sure they use the meter and you should be fine. |
If you read over all the other tips in this section, remember they are there for a good reason. Rome is like any other big city that is popular with tourists - it is also popular with beggars, con artists and thieves. It is not a dangerous place and the warnings should not put you off visiting. Just be aware of yourself and your belongings at all times and you will be fine. |
It's not a real warning 'cause Rome is a really safe city. In 28 years i've never been in real trouble. In Rome we have many gipsy, they walk around with their children asking for money. Don't stop. Don't give money, just ignore them. They ask for more or, in the worst case, they snatch your beautiful new camera or your wallet as fast as u can't understand what's happened.
