I guess everyone knows the Italian driving habits, so do not be surprised if you were cut down or even crashed. I know one thing for sure, if I would live in Rome, I would drive an old Saab. Leave a Comment |
Vespas, scooters, little motorcyles, whatever you want to call them. Watch out! They are everywhere. Actually they didn't move so fast in central Rome because there are simply too many people and other obstacles for these guys to travel too fast. It's the noise that these things make that will cause you to go mad! If you want, you can rent them also. Leave a Comment |
being a pedestrian-tourist-thing in rome is quite nerve-wrecking. you really need to take that leap of faith to cross the road. mind you, i'm not talking about jay-walking...i mean the zebra-crossing. almost motorist thinks he's michael schumacher in a ferrari and will *only* stop when you *start* crossing...and the ferrari is only about a feet away from you. Many locals get around the city by mopeds and they are not very good drivers (or they could be really good to drive like that and not get into an accident!). Either way, you really have to watch out when you walk across the road, even when it's the pedestrians' right of way. So my advice is to RUN across to avoid an accident! Although we were warned about pick-pocketing, we never saw any of this and we were walking all over the city all day long. I don't know if instances are exagerated or real. I would still watch out. What was more of a danger was crossing streets. There is a lot of traffic and you really have to have nerve to cross it if this is not something you are used to. Watch out for those motorbikes, they'll drive up on the sidewalks if they need to get around traffic. Leave a Comment |
Rome is cleaner and safer than ever. They cleaned a lot of monuments, there are no gipsies or pick pockets in the streets. But, be careful with cars. They do not respect red lights, and pay a lot of attention when crossing the streets. Sometimes, you even have to fight to make them stop so you can cross on YOUR green light! Make a lot of noise, it's an italian thing! |
Yes, it must definitely be the TRAFFIC here in Rome. Man, the traffic here is UNBELIEVABLE!! Just crossing the road alone in this city is considered a major triumph. Not kidding. I stood at the zebra crossing - attempting to cross the busy road to the Coliseum but soon realized that Italian drivers DO NOT BELIEVE in giving way to pedestrians. Sadly, not even if you look like Sophia Loren. On that fateful occasion, I TRIED to cross the road when the 'green man' was on but was honked at incessantly instead. One driver even showed me his middle finger! Not joking. Dear Italian friends - please don't take this as a negative factor. Again, this is just my personal opinion and it was what I experienced. But this does not - yes, not even for one minute - lessen my interest in this enthralling city one bit. I still loooove and adore Rome. |
A SMART car! If you have a Smart, you may be able to navigate yourself around Rome's narrow streets. However, if you are a first time visitor to Rome, I would leave the driving to the experts. Leave a Comment |
BEFORE CROSSING A STREET! Italian drivers are busy and they are ready to go! They drive INSANE!! It's like Houston but without cross walks. Just make sure you are careful and look multiple times before crossing a busy steet. They take no mercy! |
