 | Milan Museums Reviews | Tips 1 - 10 of 24 | | Close to Piazza del Duomo is the Ambrosian Library (Biblioteca Ambrosiana), named after Ambrose, the patron saint of Milan and founded by Cardinal Federico Borromeo. There are some 12,000 drawings by European artists, from the 14th through the 19th centuries, books and precious manuscripts, including the Leonardo codices, requisitioned by the French during the Napoleonic occupation, and only partly returned after 1815 or the Muratorian fragment, of ca 170 AD, the earliest example of a Biblical canon. The building was damaged in World War II, with the loss of the archives of opera libretti of La Scala, but was restored in 1952 and underwent major restorations in 1990-1997. |

On Via Manzoni, at number 12, is the Poldi-Pezzoli Museum, displaying the wonderful art collection of Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli opened to the benefit of the general public in 1881. Among the numerous painting here are displayed the Madonna and Child by Andrea Mantegna, the Lament over the Dead of Christ by Giovanni Bellini, the Madonna and Child and Lament over the Dead of Christ two painting by Sandro Botticelli or the Portrait of a young woman a masterpiece by Antonio Pollaiolo. Aside from being an important historical building in its own right, the "Royal Palace" is now one of the largest exhibition spaces in Europe and is always holding shows that are worth checking out. It always advertises current exhibitions on a banner above the door; alternatively more information can be provided by the Tourist Office next door (see my general tip). For details in English about the history of the Palazzo Reale, see (www.discountmilano.com/tour/Secoli/PalazzoDucale). For the Italian website (invluding opening hours etc) see link below. Museo del Duomo lies south of the duomo in Plazzo Reale (Royal Palace) which displays the progress of the building of the famous cathedral, as well as stained-glass windows, paintings, tapestries and elaborately carved choir stalls. There is a museum of modern art located on the second story of the Palazzo Reale. Milan's finest art collection is in the 17th century building in Palazzo di Brera. and... We were unable to see Leonardo da Vinci's "Last Supper" on the refrectory wall of Santa Maria delle Grazie due to traffic. Next time... Leave a Comment |
What we know as Palazzo Reale today is the re-construction in Neo-Classical style led by Giuseppe Piermarini in 1772-78. At that time, Milano was an Austrian city and the palace was the seat of the Holy Roman Empire. The building was severly damaged by the 1943 bombing and is consistently being restored. It is actually impossible to visit the palace, because it is permanently destinated to art exhibitions. However, if you visit one or more exhibitions, you can see some rooms, especially the Sala delle Cariatidi ("Caryatids room"). I visited two exhibitions: Canova alla corte degli Zar, showing sculptures from Sankt Peterburg's Hermitage museum (including Canova's masterpiece The three Graces), and L'arte delle donne, featuring paintings by artist women from the Renaissance to the 20th century. Although the former let me admire some beautiful rooms of the palace, I enjoyed the latter much more. Whenever you go to Palazzo Reale, more than one exhibition will be ongoing (when I went, there were two more exhibitions), so you will hardly find an excuse not to visit it. Leave a Comment |
