St Marks and Piazza: Piazza San Marco
  • Tip Rating:
  • There is only one Piazza in Venice, San Marco. Any other open square in this city is not allowed this title, and is simply called a Campo. Piazza San Marco is perhaps the most dramatic and famous Piazza in the world. It has always been the focal gathering place for all Venetians, rich and poor alike. Now, thousands of tourists fill that role every day.

Easily a day could be spent in the Piazza and it’s immediate surroundings, which include:

    - Venice’s Basilica San Marco, with rich and lavish art inside and out
    - The world class Museo Correr
    - Campanile Which towers over the square
    - The beautiful and mechanically genius Torre del’Orologio (Clock Tower)
    - The Doges Palace, a museum in itself
    - The Bridge of Sighs
    - The famous Café Florian

Any time of year, there will be follow tourists flooding in the piazza to see these sites. If you can visit early in the morning, you may have the Piazza to yourself (and a few pigeons), magic.

Cool video clip of the Piazza-

St Marks and Piazza: Basilica di San Marco - Chiesa d'Oro
  • Tip Rating:
  • Piazza San Marco of course wouldn't be the Piazza San Marco without the Basilica di San Marco. Aptly known also as the Chiesa d'Oro (Church of Gold), it is one of the most richly embellished churches in the world. The basilica is topped with an enormous cupola that is surrounded by several other smaller ones. As with many of the other churches in Italy, the fascade of the church is decorated with marble. In addition to the marble, there are beautiful mosaics depicting scenes from the life of Christ and St. Mark.

According to legend, St. Mark's body was smuggled out of Alexandria in A.D. 828 into Venice (hence, the name of St. Marks...Theodore, the Greek saint was patron saint of Venice up until this point).

When inside the Basilica di San Marco, you must set your eyes onto the Pala d'Oro, a golden altar screen set with 300 emeralds, 300 sapphires, 400 garnets, 100 amethysts, and 1,300 pearls.

Be aware that churches in Italy strictly enforce a modest dress code. No shorts, no bare shoulders or arms, and no skirts above the knees are permitted in the Basilica. Additionally, no pictures are permitted and silence must be observed.

St Marks and Piazza: Basilica di San Marco
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Markus church is dim and overcrowded.
Venice's clerical centre belongs to the most beautiful medieval constructions of the world.
With the Basilica di San Marco, Venice afforded a really eccentric church.
The church was erected for the sacred Markus' relic, the protection patron of the city.
The first Markus church was a quickly erected wood construction (829-836).
The church rose in Fleming in the year 976.
The second den, a three-ship-y Romance basilica became end of the 10.Century ready put and some decades later, from vanity and validity need torn off.
The third basilica was built between 1063 and 1094.
1204 began a late rebuilding of the church.
The Dogen heard the Basilica as house church.

Get up early one morning and make your way to St. Marks Square before the (other) tourists arrive. (I'm talking about being in the Square for about 6am)

With any luck not too many other people will have had the same idea, and you will be sharing it with some pigeons, a photographer or two, and later, the street cleaners (who still use twig brushes... what's that all about?).

It is unrecognisable from the Square you will see at midday when it fills up with noise, people & music.

Later on, if you don't want to pay the 15 - 20 euros for a cup of coffee at one of the famous bars such as Florian or Quadri, try Bar Americano next to the Basilica, where an expresso is only 1 euro!!! (listening to the orchestras in Venice is free...)

  • Directions: Sounds crazy as it's the biggest and most famous landmark in Venice, but it can still be difficult to find at times, although as you get closer, there are signs on most corners for "PER S. MARCO".

St Marks and Piazza: Venice's heart beats at the "San Marco" Square
  • Tip Rating:
  • The piazza San Marco is in Venice the most visited square.
Each Venice-traveller looks for this world-famous place that so many architectural masterpieces have.
One can bewitch also from the charm of the piazza with its famous constructions from different epochs.
At the east of the piazza, rises the magnificent facade of the Basilica di San Marco.
The Palazzo Ducale is placed at the south of the piazza.
On the other side, lies the Piazzetta dei Leoni, a small place that is dominated by the Torre dell'Orologio.
The Procuratie Vecchie are at the northern side.
Oh the opposite side gets along the Procuratie Nuove
There is accommodated, today, the Museo Civico Correr.
On three sides around the place, under the arcades, there are stylish stores and expensive historic cafes.
The Campanile (Bell Tower), Venice’s knowing nest landmark, faces exactly the basilica.
For a beautiful pause, there are many cafes from the place round.
In the Florian, in the Lavena or in which Quadri can you your silence enjoys, a coffee drinks or a delightful piece of pie eats.

St Marks and Piazza: Torre dell'Orologio
  • Tip Rating:

  • This tower and clock lead through to the Merceria, the main path leading into the Piazza. Begun in 1496, the architecture of the tower and mechanics of the clock are both amazing examples of art and craftsmanship of the time.

The clock, besides displaying the time, also shows the phases of the sun and moon and the movement of the sun through the signs of the zodiac.

The bell at the top is struck every hour by 2 bronze moors, cast in 1497. If you’re here on January 6th, you should see the 3 Kings appear from the doors on the side.

St Marks and Piazza: San Marco Square and Basilica
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Piazza San Marco has been the place of the most important religious and political activities of "La Serenissima Republic of Venice" and, for a long time, the center of Venetian social life.

The only true square in Venice ( other open areas are campi ), was, once, divided in two by the rio Batario. It had its present shape stablished in the XII century for the meeting of Pope Alexander III and the Emperor Barbarossa. The rio Batario was filled in and a small new square was built ( the Piazzeta ).

The first patron saint of Venice was St.Teodoro. In 828 St.Mark the Evangelist substituted him when his mortal remains were smuggled out from Alexandria to take the place of the Greek Saint. First buried in a chapel in the Doge's Palace, a church was built later to house the remains and after many changes, it evolved into St. Marks Basilica.

The construction of the church served to emphasize Venice's break with the Emperor at Byzantium and to underline the city's independence in religious and political matters.

    Basilica Di San Marco -
    Grand Church

Located in Piazza San Marco, The Basilica of San Marco is one of the main attractions in Venice. Here is some information about this Basilica which have inspired me and the thousands of visitors that visit each day. . . This Basilica has a fascinating blend of different building phases & influences.
The first church was built to keep the remains of St. Mark, stolen from Alexandria brought by two seafarers to Venice. The only remaining of the 1st & the 2nd buildings are a few fragments found in the crypt under the cross.
The 3rd building, that found today was built by Doge Domenico Contarini and dates from 1063. Contarini was very influenced by the Romanesque architecture of Northern Italy and so wanted this 3rd building to convey this style.
The Ground Plan of this Basilica consists of a Greek Cross having two side aisles, a main dome over the crossing, 4 huge domes situated on each arm of the cross with colonades linking the grand pilars that holds the dome.
In 1204 there were alterations to the Contarini building such as raising of the domes, adding a Northern porch and a portico on the western facade. Ruins of the crusades were used as decoration and marble mosaics manifested the vaults and later between the 14th and the 16th century the exterior was decorated in Gothic style together with sculptures & tabernacles.
The artistically decorated facade has five doorways with the middle main one holding replicas of St. Mark's four famous bronze hourses and ascending angels lifting one's vision to the highest towering statue of St. Mark.
The Basilica of St. Mark was consecrated in 1094 and was then recognized as an offical state church. The consecration was held in the presence of Emperor Henry IV.
The Interior of the Basilica boasts of rich mosaics, so rich that are unlikely to find in other western churches.

    San Marco's Church, Venice

San Marco's Basilica is probably the most important monument in Venice. The story of this church starts before its construction, in 829, when the body of St. Mark was stolen from Alexandria (Egypt) to Venice. Three years later there was the consecration of the first church of Saint Mark. But it is only in 1063 - under the Doge Contarini - that this church (as we know it) was built. From 1071 to 1084 there was the great mosaic decoration. (The story of this building is too long for a VT page).

Inside it there are mosaics and statues very important, lot of them stolen from Costantinopoli (as the Golden Pala).
In 1807 - ten years after the fall of the Venetian Republic - this Basilica became the see of the Patriarch of Venice, until then at San Pietro a Castello.

St Marks and Piazza: Torre dell Orologio
  • Tip Rating:
  • At every full time, many people gather under the renaissance clock tower, that guards the entrance to the Mercerie.
The main tower was built between 1406 and 1506; the wings came later to it.
The architect Mauro Coducci placed a Madonna and a big golden lion before a blue background decorated with stars.
The clock face with zodiac signs and a blue-golden midsection is under it.
In normally, two gigantic bronze statues knock against the hour, however in the week about Ascension Day, appears from the side doors, angels and the manners from the East.
